History and Folklore

Malachite has been prized since ancient times for its vibrant green hue and protective qualities. It was used as a talisman in Ancient Egypt to ward off evil spirits and was also ground into powder to make eye paint. The stone is associated with transformation and positive change, believed to absorb negative energies and guard against misfortune. In the Middle Ages, it was worn by children to protect them from illness.

Buyer's Guide

When purchasing Malachite, seek out stones with striking, well-defined banding patterns and a deep, rich green colour. The best quality Malachite has a smooth, polished finish and a uniform texture. Avoid stones with excessive cracks or dull areas, as these can diminish the stone's appeal. Due to its relative softness, Malachite requires careful handling and is best suited for pieces that won’t be subjected to rough wear. Ensure that the stone is natural, as imitations made from plastic or glass are common.
